Many survivors not only experience sexual and intimate partner violence, they also experience layers of oppression. Examples of oppression include racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, and sexism. Understanding the great harm racism has created for individuals, families, and our communities in Virginia, the Action Alliance has committed to building within the coalition an anti-racist framework from which to address sexual and intimate partner violence.
In order to fully end violence happening within communities, like sexual and intimate partner violence, we must also work to address violence directed against communities like police brutality, racism, economic exploitation, and mass incarceration. This conference will establish an environment for diverse professionals working to address and prevent sexual and intimate partner violence to work together with community leaders to increase our understanding of factors that increase vulnerability for violence and decrease access to conventional survivor support mechanisms for African-American communities across Virginia.
